Sailing Conditions

Tides, wind by forecast model and warnings for Irish and UK waters; growing into a weather education platform.

In development

My goal with Sailing Conditions was first to learn about where weather reporting comes from and combine sources I didn't see in use (like measurement buoys alongside weather forecasts); second, to have my own app that had my favorite pieces from others I was seeing; and finally, to make an educational platform to understand things like how a barometer tells us a storm is coming, or what wind barbs are and how to read them.

iPhone

  • Sailing Conditions summary screen for Dún Laoghaire, with a forecast summary, a map and next 24 hours conditions.
  • Sailing Conditions tide chart for Dún Laoghaire with observed and predicted levels, and a list of high and low water times.
  • Sailing Conditions wind chart comparing seven forecast models against the observed wind at Dublin Bay Buoy.
  • Sailing Conditions hourly conditions screen with measured wave data and a daily table of air temperature, wind, gusts, cloud and rain.

Apple Watch

  • Sailing Conditions on Apple Watch showing two small craft warnings for Dún Laoghaire.
  • Sailing Conditions on Apple Watch showing current wind, gusts, air temperature and wave height for Dún Laoghaire.
  • Sailing Conditions on Apple Watch showing a tide curve and the next low and high water times for Dún Laoghaire.
Where did it come from?

I had just begun sailing that year and was progressing up to Day Skipper level.

Who would it teach?

Anyone who boats or has an interest in understanding the weather. Over time I am aiming to even get things like cloud spotting and how weather systems move over hours and days, so people can truly learn from the app how to forecast their own weather from what they themselves see and observe.

Who uses it besides you?

For now it is just me, but I am sharing it with friends and family and our local sailing clubs as they ask. It needs a lot of UI work to get the "dev mode" feel out of it.
