Weekly racing

Crew on Dragonfly, a 23 ft RO265, at Poolbeg Yacht and Boat Club.

Dragonfly, a white sloop with her name on the bow, sails under mainsail and jib across grey-green water beneath heavy cloud, two crew in red jackets in the cockpit and a headland on the horizon.

I picked up weekly racing as a new hobby and pastime as my wife and I got into sailing. It doubled as a way to learn and sail for free, while also meeting people right after moving to Ireland.

How did you find the boat?

I found the boat I crew (Dragonfly) by absolute happenstance; they needed bodies and I needed a boat to go out on regularly.

What has racing taught you?

I was actually racing before my Day Skipper course, and what racing taught me is:
1) If the boat is happy (right course, right speed, etc.), then let it be.
2) A clean boat matters a lot for speed.
3) There is no such thing as "the right course to choose" until the race is over and the winners announced.

The other skills it has really enforced are things like wind awareness and what a good turn rate looks like.

What's next?

My wife and I want to expand from racing to doing deliveries, 1–3 day crewing on ferries/charters/yachts, and over time start working and running events on boats.
