While going through courses on powerboating and sailing, I realized there was a gap in how logbooking worked. Coming from a background in skydiving, I understand the importance of a logbook being attributable, auditable, and having all the detail to truly tell a stranger what you have done and are capable of. One of the biggest things multiple instructors and skippers told me is that digital logbooks lack a way to sign.

So I came up with the idea to copy some apps I have used in skydiving, while also adding technology improvements to physical sailing logbooks, like automated weather pulls for the log and GPX imports to have a track on the logbook export: all things to add further reliability and understanding of what you have done and are capable of, and that you are telling the truth to someone you're just meeting.

iPhone

  • SeaTime home screen showing total nautical miles, hours, night hours, days at sea and the last voyage.
  • SeaTime logbook list of voyages grouped by month, each marked as signed, unsigned or self-certified.
  • SeaTime voyage detail for an Irish Sea crossing, showing hours, distance, days, night hours and maximum wind.
  • SeaTime voyage detail showing crew, conditions and notes, and the signature section with the signer's name and certificate number.
  • SeaTime signature screen showing a handwritten signature with the signer's name, certificate, date, affiliation and qualifications.
Where did it come from?

I was specifically in my National Powerboat Course in Ireland when this really caught my attention.

Who signs the log?

Skippers, instructors, and certification and qualification administrators.

Who uses it now?

It is just me and my wife for now, but I have shared it with others. It is just proving a bit hard to get the privacy policy and other things in place. The end goal will be to offer it for free. It was recently ported to Android as well, so it will hopefully prove valuable to any sailor who wants the capability.

What's next?

Right now I don't have new features planned. I just need testing so I can work on fixing the things I haven't caught yet. A few more export features may be down the road, like a full resume or references sheet.
